Parking lots are a common place for accidents. According to the National Safety Council, more than 50,000 accidents occur in parking lots each year.
Many accidents occur due to the blind corners and close quarters that occur in every parking lot.
Some basic tips when parking to avoid incidents:
STAY CENTERED
Park your car centered and straight in the spot as best as you can.
AVOID OTHERS
Watch the cars you park near. Avoid parking next to cars that are too close to the line or sitting crooked.
FIND A SAFE SPOT
Avoid parking at the end of the line or near a blind turn; the risk for damage or an accident becomes greater in these spots.
BACK IN - NOT OUT
Not only is backing into a parking spot safer, experts also say it’s more efficient. You
get a much wider and more reliable field of vision when pulling out forwards than you do when having to back out of a space. That wider field of vision is more critical to your safety while pulling out than it is when pulling in, even though pulling in may be easier initially. When backing out of a space, you’re focused on all sides, watching for clearances, while also having to look out for moving cars and pedestrians.
