OSHA Fatal 4 in Construction

The "Fatal 4" are the injuries that are responsible for over 50% of construction related deaths. They are: falls, electrocutions, struck-by objects, and caught-between objects.


Here are some quick tips to avoid potential tragedies.


Falls

  • Wear proper PPE (Fall harness)

  • Use 3 points of contact when climbing a ladder

  • Do not over-reach, move the ladder for better access

  • Stay behind safety barriers and away from edges

Electrocutions

  • Use proper lock-out tag-out procedures

  • Do not work in standing water

  • Assess your work area and notify your manager of unsafe conditions

Struck by objects

  • Be cognizant of your surroundings

  • Wear all PPE (hard hat, boots, glasses, etc.)

  • Do not cross danger (red) or caution (yellow) tape without approval.

Caught between objects

  • Keep your fingers and other body parts out of pinch-point areas

  • Don't get in a hurry and forget common sense

  • Assess your work area and notify your manager of unsafe conditions
