General Office Safety

When we think of safety, we normally think of our coworkers working out in the field on construction sites and driving on the crowded highways.
However, even in the office, we can be exposed or find hazardous conditions.
During a recent visit to one of Isett offices, an extension cord that the janitorial contractor used weekly was severely twisted and worn, exposing electrical wires and possibly exposing a person to an electrical shock or starting a fire.
This is just one of many items that can cause hazards around the office.
See the picture below for a close-up on the worn wire.

Common Office Hazards
Poor Ergonomic Desk/chair setups causing unnecessary fatigue on skeletal and muscles. It is highly recommended to take regular breaks away from your desk. Get up and move around, the more often, the better.
Slips, Trips, and Falls. Be aware of your surroundings. If you see an obstruction in pathways or stairs – take the time to remove these. The next person may not see it.
Good housekeeping is good practice. Not only does it reduce fire hazards but reduces trips and falls and is fundamental to good organizational habits.
Electrical extension cords should not be used as permanent wiring. If cords are used, make sure they are routed correctly and are in good condition.
Know your office emergency evacuation plan. Know where your nearest exits are and where the fire extinguishers are located. Be aware that exits and extinguishers should not be blocked or hidden.
Good lighting is imperative. If you feel your office area lighting is inadequate, contact your manager.
Top heavy file cabinets and book shelfs should be secured from “tip over”.
We have a Facilities Manager at Isett. Part of his job is to make sure you are safe at work with respect to the facilities. If there are any hazards that you identify throughout the course of your work day, please feel free to contact Mike Hardcastle or your manager and we will try our best to correct these ASAP.
