Driving Around Deer in PA

Why are deer a driving hazard?

They are unpredictable:

  • Unlike humans who follow traffic rules (hopefully!), deer can dart out onto roads with zero warning, often at dusk or dawn when visibility is low.

They are herd-minded:

  • Seeing one deer usually means there are more nearby, potentially multiplying your collision risk.

They're tough customers:

  • Hitting a deer can cause major damage to your car and, worse, serious injuries to yourself and your passengers.

5 quick tips for deer safety:

Keep your eyes peeled:

Scan the sides of the road, especially near wooded areas and around twilight hours.

Slow down in deer zones:

Heed those yellow warning signs, they're there for a reason!

Don't swerve!:

This might seem counterintuitive, but swerving can lead to losing control and causing an even worse accident. Brake firmly and stay in your lane.

Honk your horn:

A quick honk can spook deer away from the road.

Wear your seatbelt:

This goes without saying, but it could save your life in a collision.
