Please see below for some home safety tips for winter, as the snow falls outside.
Check the Weather: Don’t get caught in bad weather! Check the local weather maps prior to heading out. Untreated roads can quickly become treacherous! Watch the snowfall from inside your home, not through the windshield!
Maintain Your Vehicle: Keep your vehicle neat and clean, inside and out. Make sure to clear off snow and ice before driving. Check your roof rack for ice and snow.
Take care when parking: When possible back into a parking spot. Don’t rely only on your backup camera to navigate obstacles, especially in the snow, rain and ice. These elements can make your backup cameras blurry.
Watch your step: Be careful walking around your vehicle, getting in and out and reaching for equipment. Icy conditions might be lurking where you least expect them. Keep your arms free when traversing icy areas and always wear the appropriate footwear.
Wear Layers: Always check the current weather conditions and the weather conditions in the direction you are headed. Dress appropriately for each. Dress in warm layers to prepare for all weather types.
Inner layer – light, synthetic thermal shirt close to the body to trap heat
Middle layer – wool or synthetic fabric, such as a sweater or jacket
Outer layer – outdoor jacket designed to break the wind and allow for ventilation
Don’t forget a face mask to protect from the cold and COVID-19!
Snow Removal*: when shoveling heavy snow, remember to lift the shovel with your legs and not your back. Take frequent breaks and stay hydrated. When using a snow blower, be sure to inspect all mechanical parts while the snowblower is off. Never stick your hands in an operational snowblower.
*Please note that this is a home safety tip, associates should not shovel Isett properties. Please report shoveling needs to the Facilities Manager.
Don’t Forget your Pets! Like people, cats and dogs are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia and should be kept inside during severe temperatures.
Vehicle Tips
Additionally, associates have recently reported minor incidents related to vehicles. Our greatest risk of injury is driving so continue to drive safely, maintain your vehicle and report any issues immediately.
Here are a few lessons learned:
Back into a parking spot whenever possible.
Don’t rely solely on the camera – use mirrors as well.
Ask someone nearby for back up assistance.
Arrive early so you can take your time parking safely.
Be aware of obstacles and blind spots.
