Heat Stress & Heat Stroke

Be Prepared to Beat the Heat!

As we know, overexposure to heat can cause harm, especially to those working outside. There are several heat related illnesses that affect workers, the most harmful being heat stroke. Other heat illnesses, such as heat exhaustion, heat cramps and heat rash are also common and can be avoided with proper care.


To Prevent Heat Illnesses:

  • Drink plenty of fluids. Water is the best defense against heat illnesses.

  • Take a break when you are outside. Move to a shaded or air-conditioned area when possible.

  • Pace yourself, if you are not accustomed to the heat start slowly and pick up the pace gradually.

  • Avoid heavy meals, caffeine and limit your salt intake

  • Know signs/symptoms of heat illnesses; monitor yourself and watch out for others

  • Block out direct sun and other heat sources by wearing a hat and sunglasses

  • Wear lightweight, light colored, loose fitting clothes.


What to Do When a Worker is Ill from the Heat

  • Call for help. If no one is available, call 911.

  • Move to a cooler/shaded area

  • Remove outer clothing

  • Fan and mist the worker with water; apply ice (ice bag or ice towels)

  • Provide cool drinking water
